What sort of crate do you recommend?Back to top]

We prefer the VeriKennel or equivalent as they keep hair and debris in one place. Size: Approximately 24"W x 35"D x 26"H. Others prefer wire crates - the size should be about the same.

What sort of collar should I get?Back to top]

Adjustable buckle collar - first collar should be for l0"-14" neck. Next collar should be 14"-20". Nylon is best. COLLARS SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ON WHEN PUPPY IS UNATTENDED.

What other equipment will I need?Back to top]

We recommend two stainless steel or hard plastic dog dishes, and a slicker brush (one with bent pins) for weekly grooming. Dog shampoo can also be used whenever the puppy looks or smells dirty.

What type of food should I use?Back to top]

You can use any premium brand puppy food.

What type of toys do you recommend?Back to top]

Rawhide bones and plastic or rubber dogs toys are good. Provide something for your puppy to chew or the puppy will choose his own. Do not give the puppy old shoes as toys; a puppy can't tell new from old.

What type of cleaning product should I when my puppy has accidents?Back to top]

We recommend Simple Solution by Brampton; it's a great cleanup product.

How old to fly with a puppy?Back to top]

Eight weeks

When do you recommend training begin?Back to top]

We recommend training begin on day 1 using positive reinforcement methods. Puppy class should start at 12 weeks of age and a traditional obedience class should follow. We DO NOT recommend clicker training or head collars.

What books about labradors do you recommend? Back to top

How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Rutherford and Neill, an Alpine Production. If you raise your puppy this way, you'll have a perfect dog.

Retriever Puppy Training: The Right Start for Hunting by Loveland and Rutherford. Gets you started on the right track for field work

Retriever Working Certificate Training by Rutherford, Branstad and Whicker. Helps in competitive event training.

Water Dog by Richard Wolters.A great book but may be misleading as it assumes all dogs learn at the same rate and develop equally - contains no problem solving tips and problems do occur.

The Labrador Retriever by Dorothy Howe, An A.T.F.H. publication. Good general breed book about the origins of a breed and pedigrees.

How to Housetrain Your Dog in Seven Days by Shirlee Kalstone. A great book BUT THE PUPPY MUST BE TWELVE WEEKS OLD OR MOORE.
